Temporary Non-Exempt Staff, Urban Education (Finance)

Salary: $12 - $28/hourly

Description:

This grant-funded project addresses issues related to connectivity and literacy and prepares the labor force to meet the challenge of economic growth in Houston, Texas. Prospective employees will be hired in various roles to help support the youth and their families selected to participate in this project.

1. IT Worker: The project will employ one (1) IT worker to configure laptops under the supervision of the full-time IT staff and the project officers. The person chosen will answer IT hardware/software- phone calls and troubles! It will include helping the UHD e-library web designer as needed.

2. Story Readers: The project will employ four (4) story readers that will give professional quality to the e-story pronunciation, intonation, speed, fluency, and expression.

3. Learning Activity Designers: The project will employ two (2) activity designers who will use PowerPoint to teach literacy concepts, such as synonyms, using the UHD Bilingual Digital Library. The candidates need to have excellent PowerPoint skills.

4. Illustrators/Graphic Designers: The project will employ two (2) illustrators/graphic designers to design visuals for e-books, web pages, and flyers.

5. Video Editors: The project will employ two (2) video editors to support the production of bilingual videos for the e-library and help the project's YouTube channel with its video production.

6. Bilingual Parent Assistants in Aldine ISD: The project will hire two (2) parents to support Hispanic families at Aldine ISD using the UHD Bilingual Digital Library.

Their duties are as follows:

  • Mobilizing Hispanic families to become users of the UHD Bilingual e-Library
  • Plan and participate in monthly activities to celebrate literacy using the UHD e-Library at the school
  • Encourage Hispanic families to write stories using the library's YouTube channel
  • Disseminate information about the UHD degree offering
  • Work with the UHD e-Library Coordinator to encourage Hispanic families to attend monthly meetings at UHD Main (face-to-face or online)
  • Serves as a communication liaison with the school's parents

7. Community Engagement Coordinators: The project will employ two (2) coordinators, one coordinator for community outreach and a second for community networks.

Duties will include the following:

a) Community Outreach: Plan monthly activities to bring families to UHD.
  • Plan literacy activities at the seven schools with the assistance of the reading managers and UHD parents
  • Network with student associations at UHD to establish reading clubs to support literacy activities in the community
  • Monitor and support the reading clubs to celebrate literacy

b) Community Network: Promote the UHD digital library by contacting community colleges, public libraries, school districts, and charter schools.
  • Network with the business community to promote the UHD e-library service to their employees
  • Keep daily Instagram and Facebook updates on school events and UHD e-library activities
  • Publish weekly articles/videos about the UHD e-library activities on the UHD website
  • Participate in the fundraising campaign for the UHD e-library literacy activities
  • Any other duties assigned

Qualifications:
  • Proficient in Spanish & English (reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills)
  • The area of study and/or work experience must match the fields that each position is requesting
  • High School education or terminal degree
