Exhibit Graphic Designer (Creative Design)



OVERVIEW:

The Exhibit Graphic Designer designs, produces, fabricates, installs and maintains exhibit graphics, labels and graphics for exhibits, educational programs, presentations and environmental signage and other graphics at The Children's Museum of Indianapolis. The incumbent is responsible for the creation, fabrication, installation, and maintenance of graphics for temporary and traveling exhibits, ephemeral cases, displays, operational signage, way-finding signage, programs as well as on-going graphics requests. The designer works closely with colleagues in exhibit and brand strategy and sales to ensure consistent aesthetic and quality standards and met.

REPORTS TO:  Director of Graphics

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Develops and designs graphics themes appropriate for information delivery in galleries, exhibits and displays, for promotional uses, environmental signage and electronic delivery media that are effective, innovative and meet graphics quality standards established by the Museum.
  2. Manages multiple graphics projects for temporary and traveling exhibits. Manages multiple exhibit graphics budgets with outside vendors ensuring costs incurred stay within budget guidelines. Acts as support for the lead designer on permanent exhibit projects.
  3. Works closely with colleagues in brand strategy and sales to track, design, and fabricate internal department requests for signage. This includes coordinating, designing, and producing appropriate signage, labels, and graphics based on approved copy and designs.
  4. Works with co-workers to coordinate and process requests for signage including signage for gallery operations, educational programs, institutional operations and events, and environmental signage. This includes coordinating, designing, and producing appropriate signage, labels, and graphics based on approved copy and designs.
  5. Coordinates and manages relationships and installation schedules with outside printing vendors.
  6. Conducts verbal presentations of conceptual drawings describing concepts represented in drawings. Presents and explains concepts through visual storytelling in a succinct and compelling manner.
  7. Stays current on new production methods and media, especially those allowing innovation in designs.
  8. Engages in regular graphics maintenance tasks as assigned by senior designer and director.
  9. Assists with the overall day-to-day operation of the graphics production room including basic large-format printer maintenance, organization of supplies and materials, and advising the senior graphic designer of supply reordering needs.

REQUIREMENTS:

  1. All candidates must submit a portfolio attached or linked through resume and/or application.
  2. Bachelor's degree preferred.
  3. Five (5) years of experience in graphic design and production including experience in museums or in related fields such as theme parks, theater or themed retail with demonstrated experience in Adobe Creative Suite
  4. Experience with large format printing. Ability to do basic printer cleaning and coordinate in-depth printer maintenance.
  5. Ability to easily generate and communicate innovative verbal and visual ideas in artistic styles appropriate for children and family audiences.
  6. Ability to work with diverse groups of individuals within a team environment.

ADA REQUIREMENTS:

  1. Must be able to visually perceive space and colors and to make esthetic assessments of installations, to produce drawings of designs in visual media.  Must be able to view computer monitor and conduct public presentations.
  2. Requires extensive communication in brainstorming and planning situations and strong presentations of ideas.  Team and group dialog required for communication of plans and concepts.
  3. Requires extensive drawing and illustration skills and heavy usage of keyboard and computerized equipment. May also be required to perform intricate operations with computer graphics. 
  4. Must be able to sit or stand for extended periods of time, lift up to 30lbs, climb ladders, and tolerate dust in the work environment.
